Methods/steps

  1. 1. Pay attention to regular calibration and inspection:

    Toxic and harmful gas detectors, like other analytical testing instruments, all perform measurements using relatively comparative methods: first, the instrument is calibrated using a zero gas and a standard concentration gas to obtain a standard curve stored within the instrument. During measurement, the electrical signal generated by the gas concentration to be measured is compared with the electrical signal of the standard concentration, allowing the accurate gas concentration value to be calculated. Therefore, it is essential to perform zero calibration of the instrument at any time and regularly calibrate the instrument to ensure accurate measurements. It should be noted that although many gas detectors today have replaceable sensors, this does not mean that a detector can be used with different probes at any time. Whenever replacing a probe, in addition to requiring a certain sensor activation time, the instrument must be recalibrated. In addition, it is recommended that various instruments undergo response testing with standard gas before use to ensure the instrument truly provides protection.

  2. 2. Pay attention to detection interference between different sensors:

    Generally, each sensor corresponds to a specific detection gas, but no gas detector can be absolutely specific. Therefore, when choosing a gas sensor, one should try to understand the interference of other gases with that sensor to guarantee accurate detection of the specific gas.

  3. 3. Pay attention to the lifespan of various sensors:

    All types of gas sensors have a certain service life. Generally speaking, in portable instruments, LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) sensors have a longer lifespan, usually around three years; photoionization detectors last four years or longer; electrochemical sensors for specific gases have relatively shorter lifespans, usually one to two years; oxygen sensors have the shortest lifespan, about one year. The lifespan of electrochemical sensors depends on the drying of the electrolyte, so if not used for an extended period, sealing them in a cooler environment can extend their service life. Fixed instruments, due to their larger size, have sensors with longer lifespans. Therefore, sensors should be regularly checked and used within their effective period, and replaced promptly once they are no longer functional.

  4. 4. Pay attention to the concentration measurement range of detectors:

    All toxic and harmful gas detectors have a fixed detection range. Accurate measurements can only be guaranteed within this range. Prolonged measurement beyond the detection range may permanently damage the sensor.

  5. For example, if an LEL detector is used in an environment above 100% LEL, it may completely destroy the sensor. Similarly, toxic gas detectors used for a long time at high concentrations may also be damaged. Therefore, when a fixed instrument emits an over-limit signal during use, the measurement circuit should be immediately turned off to ensure sensor safety.
