At noon on June 20, under the scorching sun and thick dust at Laigang 620 Plant, an Iveco car slowly drove into the factory and stopped beside the blast furnace. A hose slowly extended from the truck, aimed at the alarm probe on the furnace frame, and the people inside immediately got busy: "Prepare standard gas, concentration 700," "Preparation complete, prepare for testing," "Alarm, time 12s, record," "Concentration shown: 702, recorded...... With each instruction following one by one, work is intense and orderly. This is the scene of staff at the Laiwu City Metrology Verification and Testing Institute in Shandong Province working at the gas alarm detection site. Since the successful development of the "Online Gas Alarm Detection System" in February 2012, it has truly achieved "keen ears and eyes" for alarms, making technical verification convenient and fast.
It is understood that Laiwu is an emerging industrial city dominated by steel, with 18 of the province's 100 high-energy-consuming enterprises identified in Laiwu. As China gradually enters industrialization, safety accidents occur frequently every year. In this environment, the verification of gas detectors becomes especially important, and frontline workers must be provided with a safe working environment.
Staff at the Laiwu City Metrology Verification and Testing Institute conduct regular annual inspections of the alarms. Verification personnel carry various testing instruments to the sites of chemical, ironmaking, oxygen generators, and other enterprises. The verification of gas alarms by high energy-consuming enterprises such as Laigang Group, Taishan Steel, and Jiuyang Group not only faces issues of large quantities and short cycles, but also causes significant difficulties due to installation locations: some are installed near nearly a hundred meters of blast furnaces, some are set in large gas storage tanks, and some require climbing dozens of meters of elevated roads by hand. To test instruments in a plant area, metrology verification personnel sometimes have to walk dozens of kilometers at high altitudes or on pipelines. Many times, I dare not take a deep breath because the air is filled with the strong smell of chemical gases; After a day of work, my face is covered in black dust, and even my nose is black. It's not only exhausting, but my work efficiency isn't very high. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a new detection method to improve work efficiency.
In 2011, Laiwu Metrology Institute invested over 300,000 yuan to purchase various instruments and equipment. Relying on the Iveco bus, it installed onboard devices such as dynamic gas distribution devices for standard materials, insulation, moisture purification, and filtration, as well as real-time transmission, analysis, and report issuance of system test data. This effectively isolates the laboratory from the harsh frontline environment, forming a mobile laboratory capable of conducting on-site inspections, testing, and maintenance in enterprises. In February 2012, the "Online Gas Alarm Detection System" technology project was appraised by experts from the Institute of Chemistry at the China Institute of Metrology, the Shandong Institute of Metrology, and the Wusan Research Institute of China North Industries Group, who unanimously agreed that the project "fills a domestic gap and its technical level is leading in the country." After more than a year of practice, the system not only increased detection methods, enhanced detection capabilities, facilitated data extraction, and ensured accurate data detection in hazardous locations and the personal safety of personnel, but also improved work efficiency by more than 50%. It saved enterprises over 300,000 yuan in inspection costs annually and created direct economic value of more than 1 million yuan.
