Many people may have seen explosion-proof lamps and learned about some of their uses, such as an early form of "biogas" gas detector in underground coal mine sewers. Although originally intended for use as a light source, the device can also be used to assess combustible gas levels—with an accuracy of about 25-50%, mainly depending on the user's experience, training, age, color perception, and so on. Modern combustible gas detectors should be more accurate, reliable, and repeatable than the original ones. Although many attempts have been made to overcome the subjectivity of safety lamp measurements (such as using a flame temperature sensor), safety lamps have now been almost entirely replaced by more modern electronic devices. Nevertheless, the most commonly used device today, combustion sensors, can be considered early developments in modern explosion-proof lamps in some respects, because their operation still depends on the combustion of a gas and its conversion into carbon dioxide and water.
