Stable operation can be further improved by using anti-virus sensors. These sensors have a higher resistance to the degrading effects of substances that can quickly inactivate (or 'suppress') other types of combustion sensors.

To ensure temperature stability under constantly changing environmental conditions, the best catalytic combustion sensors use thermistors. They are located on opposing branches of a Wheatstone bridge circuit. On these two branches, one 'sensitive' sensor (commonly called the 's' sensor) will react with all combustible gases present, while the other balanced 'inert' or 'non-sensitive' (n-s) sensor will not. Inert operation can be achieved by coating the bead with a thin layer of glass or deactivating the catalyst, so that it serves only as a compensator for any external temperature or humidity changes.
